Growing Chillies

Chillies are generally easy to grow.
They are annuals grown during the warmer months, however you can normally grow enough to last the whole year round.

Sow the chilli seeds indoors in a container approximately 6 weeks before you plan to plant the seedlings in the garden.
Keep them in a warm place in full sun. Keep the soil moist, but not soaked with water.
Plant the seedlings in early spring. Choose a sunny place in the garden for your chillies and plant them 1 to 2 feet apart in well drained soil.

If seedlings start to get a little leggy before planting out, pinch them back to help them grow more bushy.

Choose a sunny spot for your chillies and plant them 1—2 feet apart in well drained soil. The plants need regular watering, and use a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks for faster growth and more fruit . Ideal temperatures are 70—85°F during the day and a slightly cooler 65°F at night. You may be able to grow the plants in containers or greenhouses, but make sure they always have plenty of sunlight.

The plants take about 2 months or more to produce fruit after planting out. The pods can be picked green, or leave them on the plant another month to mature more: depending on the variety, many may turn brown, purple, orange or yellow; most eventually turn red or brown—black. They’ll get sweeter, but not hotter.
